How it works

THE HISTORY OF THE PROMTERS APPLICATION

Perhaps not everyone knows that the palm in creating the prompt devices on TV belongs to Russia, more exactly – to the Soviet Union. It is also known the name of its inventor - Vladimir Pokorskiy. It was he who worked as a director assistant in the department of Television Broadcasting Committee of the Leningrad Radio Data (later converted into a Leningrad TV) and in 1949 he made announcers’ lives easier. He invented a rather cumbersome and quite unlike construction that is used today, of two drums and a roll of wallpaper, on which a narration was written. The first drum was a feed roller, and the second was a receiver. This "miracle of technology" was called a prompt text by Pokorskiy. Drums with wound paper were supplemented by a large lens in order to enlarge the text for easy reading. The inventor was not satisfied with this and continued improving the system. As the result a prompter TC-52 was appeared (autocue of 1952 design), which after a short period of time had also been improved and acquired the form of those devices that are used in television today. In 1953 Pokorskiy’s invention had been already used in TV centers in Moscow and Kiev, and later in other cities.

Despite the fact that Vladimir Pokorskiy was, in fact, a pioneer in the creation of teleprompters, his name had been almost forgotten (as it often was the usual case in Soviet times) and not been known to the most of TV workers. In foreign sources, it had not been mentioned at all. It was affirmed that the first teleprompters were created in the USA and the UK approximately at the same time.

The company «TelePrompTer» (USA) was founded in 1950 by Fred Barton Jr., Hubert J. Schlafly and Irving Berlin Kahn. Barton was an actor, who proposed the idea of the teleprompter as a means of assistance for presenters who needed to memorize a huge amount of text in a short time.

The first teleprompter on the personal computer basis CompuPrompt appeared in 1982. It was created and manufactured by Courtney M. Goodin and Laurence B. Abrams in Hollywood. The device had a software package for Atari 800 and a modified video camera. Later the company became a “ProPromptInc” and up to now it works with teleprompters.

Other manufacturers of the paper teleprompters «Q-TV» and «Telescript» have not fallen behind and in a few years have presented their teleprompters versions on the computer basis. At that time the computers graphic subsystem could smoothly replay the displayed text.

In the late 1990's - early 2000's the company «Autoscript» was the first in using LCD monitors instead of the previously used CRT monitors. The same company had introduced the high-contrast displays that permitted the teleprompters usage in direct sunlight.

PROMTERS APPLICATION DURING APPEARANCE

Teleprompters are used during the appearances and speeches. In such teleprompter, the glass with a partially reflective surface is used as the reflecting surface. It is virtually transparent and does not cover the vision for the audience or cameras. Usually two such teleprompters are installed on both sides of the rostrum (if it is available), so that the speaker can see at least one during looking at any part of the audience. Such teleprompters are not different from those that are used on television except the changed surface appearance.

They have had the prevalence during speeches, ceremonies, concerts etc.

PROMTERS CONCERT APPLICATION

Sometimes the prompters are used during concert in order to help the performers who sing the new songs live (Luchyano Pavarotti, Mick Jagger etc.). These prompters are identical to those that are used during speeches. The only difference is in the number of bases used by the prompter, and their arrangement on the stage. Also, the podium prompters are actively used during concerts, which represent a system of monitors placed in the stage front line, on the backstage, and sometimes on the balcony gantry of the hall.

A speaker may tell in any tone – feeling a speech and the audience. The prompter is controlled by the operator exclusively with the speed with which the speaker says (!). In other words the speaker must not keep up with the prompter, but quite the contrary. The operator is attentively listening to your speech and broadcasting the necessary text. If the speaker digresses from text or it is needed the pause for applause - the text on the prompter is ready for further work at exact point where it is stopped at.
It does not matter how speaker talks fast or slow. The operator controls the prompter being exceptionally guided by the speaker’s tempo rhythm.
